The Guide Promise

Why make a Promise?

There are lots of things that makes Guides different to a youth group for example, but the most important one is that Guides all round the world make pretty much the same Promise - that includes your own Guider!

It means that all Guides are aiming for the same, wherever they live, and that they can trust each other to try their best.

The Promise

I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and To keep the Guide Law.

What does the Promise mean?

The Promise is about doing your best and that will be different for each Guide. Look at the next few paragraphs and have a think about what the words of the Promise mean to you.

The Promise is made of three parts: loving your God, serving your country and keeping the Guide Law.

Loving your God

Some people might regularly go to a place of worship such as Holy Trinity Bickerstaffe, some might believe in a God but haven't done much more about it. How do you love your God? Here are some examples:

	Looking after the world
	Caring for others
	Exploring what your faith teaches and then living by it
	Sharing your faith with others so that they understand it and being prepared to understand theirs too!

Serving your country

Serving your country, its people and the Queen means all sorts of things:

	Keeping laws
	Being a useful member of your community
	Learning about your history and culture
	Helping people understand and respect where you come from when you are abroad.

Keeping the Guide Law

Trying to live by the Guide Laws which challenge the way we live and the choices we make could affect almost everything you do. The Laws are:

	A Guide is honest, reliable and can be trusted.
	A Guide is helpful and uses her time and abilities wisely.
	A Guide faces challenge and learns from her experiences.
	A Guide is a good friend and a sister to all Guides.
	A Guide is polite and considerate.
	A Guide respects all living things and takes care of the world around her.
	Try to work out what they mean in practical terms for you.

Making your Promise

Making your Promise is a very important part of being a Guide. You should understand what it means to you and then make it when you are ready. Maybe you'd like to discuss it with your Guider first. When and where, it's up to you!
