WELCOME TO BICKERSTAFFE REMEMBERS

This site has been compiled with two aims in mind.

First and foremost as the title suggests it is meant to be a permanent reminder to the people of Bickerstaffe, of the supreme sacrifice paid by 33 parishioners in two World Wars.

Secondly, it is a record to which future visitors to the various battlefields can refer, to find the exact location of all the lads’ graves, or places of commemoration.

The information on this site was compiled in 1990, after interviewing the many relatives or those with knowledge that could be found 72 years on. Furthermore, it will give a true meaning when we stand at the Church Memorial each year on Remembrance Sunday and proclaim:

'We Will Remember Them’

THANKS

A big thank you must go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for their share of the information given. Microfiche copies from the Ormskirk Advertiser of that period. The George Newnes publication "Twenty Years After". Also to the families and friends of the 33 servicemen who have supplied other stories and information.  A special mention must go to my daughter Amanda for the calligraphy in the original copies.

On completion of this work, I rediscovered this picture, which my Mother had painted in 1919. It was painted from a postcard which advertised Bickerstaffe Church Easter Services of that year, and depicts 'The Angel of Mons'.
