In May 1989, 37 parishioners and friends embarked on what
is believed to be the first trip of it’s kind from Bickerstaffe, to pay their
respects to those who died in the First World War.
The trip was run by a specialist
company and visited many places of interest where the
Great War was fought.
These included Ypres, Tyne Cot, Passchendale, Hill 60, Boezinge, Vimy Ridge,
Arras, Newfoundland
Park, Albert and many others including the Somme area.
Everyone
on the visit was very moved by the experience, not least was Mrs Sheila Beeby
who sums it all up in the poem she wrote soon
afterwards, which is included in this site. Sheila was also responsible for the
collection of pressed flowers collected at various sites, images
of which are also available on this site.
